“Eros and Thanatos” is a sculpture carved from pear wood, with an oak base and metal rods connecting the separate parts. I kept the natural grain, cracks, and irregularities of the wood visible, combining smooth surfaces with rough, deeply carved areas.
The work explores the tension between the desire to live and the slow process of dying. Eros represents the impulse toward life, while Thanatos represents decay and dissolution. These two forces exist together and constantly interact, shaping our experience of being alive.
The open spaces and thin metal connections between the wooden forms became a physical expression of this relationship. The result is a structure that feels strange and fragile, but at the same time balanced and whole.
